How to Use This List

Medicine draws more applicants than almost any subject, which makes a thoughtful, genuinely understood project unusually valuable, and a vague one unusually forgettable. The questions below are narrow on purpose: a medicine interviewer would far rather hear a student reason carefully about one specific question than gesture at a vast one.

Use them as starting points to refine. The strongest pre-university medicine projects are literature reviews or analyses of public-health data, because original clinical research is rarely feasible or ethical at school level. Choose a Method Before a Topic

None of these projects needs a laboratory, and the choice that decides whether yours is feasible is the method, not the disease. Every question below is tagged with one of four routes.

Literature review

Read 6 to 10 papers on one narrow question and synthesise what they collectively show, including where they disagree. The most underrated route, and the closest to what medical researchers actually spend their time doing.

Google Scholar and a reading log. No approvals, no lab.

Public dataset

Analyse data someone else collected: WHO Global Health Observatory, Our World in Data, or national statistics offices all publish usable health data. The skill being shown is careful handling of real numbers, not collection.

A spreadsheet, one dataset, and honesty about what the data cannot show.

Policy analysis

Take one health policy or intervention and evaluate it against its own stated goals using published evaluations. Sits between science and politics, which suits applicants aiming at medicine, public health or PPE.

Government or NGO evaluation reports, which are free and public.

Ethics argument

Defend a position on a genuine ethical problem in medicine, engaging the strongest counterargument rather than a weak one. The route most undervalued by students and most valued at interview, because it is where reasoning shows.

What Counts as Clinical Research at School Level

Students searching for clinical research projects are usually picturing something they cannot legally do. Clinical research means research on human participants, and it requires ethical approval from a review board, a qualified investigator, and in almost every jurisdiction an adult with clinical responsibility. No school student runs a trial, and no admissions tutor expects one.

What is genuinely open to you is the work that surrounds a trial rather than the trial itself. Every registered study in the world is public at ClinicalTrials.gov, including its design, its endpoints, and often its results. Comparing what a trial set out to measure against what it eventually reported is real methodological work, it is how published critiques of the literature are written, and it needs nothing but a browser.

The three routes that work are appraising published trials against a standard checklist, synthesising several studies on one narrow question, and analysing anonymised public health data that someone else collected. All three are listed above.

Why the Ethics Matter

Medicine is the field where the line between genuine research and over-reach is sharpest. A survey of classmates about their health, presented as evidence, is not a strength; it is a sign the student has not understood what reliable medical evidence requires. The integrity of the method is part of what is being assessed.

A literature-based or data-based project sidesteps these hazards while teaching the critical reading that medicine demands from the first week: weighing study quality, noticing where a claim outruns its evidence, and synthesising findings that do not entirely agree. A mentor’s central job is to develop exactly that judgement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a high school student do medical research without seeing patients or a lab?

Yes. Almost all strong pre-university medicine projects are literature-based or analyse existing public-health data. Synthesising the research on a clinical or public-health question, or examining a medical-ethics problem rigorously, is genuine work and needs no clinical access.

Is a research project useful for a medicine application specifically?

Yes. Medicine is among the most competitive subjects, and a focused project demonstrates the intellectual engagement and research literacy that admissions tutors and interviewers look for, well beyond work experience. Crucially, the student must be able to discuss it honestly and in depth.

Should I run my own clinical study or survey?

Usually not. Research involving patients or health data raises serious ethical and practical issues that are hard to clear at school level. A careful literature review or an analysis of an established public dataset teaches more and stands on firmer ground.

What makes a medicine research question strong rather than too broad?

Specificity grounded in evidence. "How do we cure cancer" is not a project; "what does the evidence say about how socioeconomic status affects early cancer diagnosis" is a question a focused review can genuinely address.
