Ladder Internships alternative: a different product, not a worse one
Ladder places students inside real startups. We supervise original research. These evidence different things, and the useful question is which one your application actually needs.

What Ladder does well
- The placements are at real companies doing real work, not simulations. Ladder names more than fifty host companies across healthcare technology, fintech, mental health, environmental science and the non-profit sector.
- Working to someone else’s deadline for a business outcome is a genuinely different skill from academic research, and it is one most school-age students have never practised.
- The stated acceptance figures, 1,200 selected from 6,200 or more applications, mean the cohort is filtered rather than open-enrolment.
- For a student who wants to test whether they actually like startups or a particular industry, eight weeks inside one answers that question far better than reading about it.
Where we differ
An internship and a research project are not substitutes
They evidence different things. An internship shows you can be useful inside an organisation. A research project shows you can frame a question nobody set you and pursue it when it stops being fun. Most competitive applications benefit from the second, and some benefit from both.
Who owns the output
Work produced during an internship generally belongs to the company and serves its objectives. A research project belongs to the student, which matters when an interviewer asks them to defend the choices in it.
What a UCAS application can use
UCAS Question 3 asks what you have done to prepare for the course. A startup internship is often more relevant to a business or computing application than to medicine, classics or physics. Check that the placement connects to the course before assuming it will carry weight.
The fee is discussed before you commit
Ladder does not publish a price. We do not publish a single figure either, because scope varies, but we confirm the fee in writing at the consultation before any payment is requested, and there is no obligation after it.
When each makes sense
Ladder may fit better when
- The student wants workplace experience rather than academic research.
- They are aiming at business, entrepreneurship, product or applied computing.
- They want to test an industry before committing a degree to it.
- A named company on a CV matters more to them than authored work.
ScholarBridge may fit better when
- The application needs evidence of independent academic thinking.
- The student is applying through UCAS, where subject-specific preparation is assessed directly.
- They want something they authored and can defend under questioning.
- The subject is one where startup placements are scarce or irrelevant.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Ladder Internships cost?
Ladder does not publish a price on its own site, so we are not going to quote one. Ask them directly, and ask what is included and whether the placement is guaranteed before you pay. Checked 29 July 2026.
Are Ladder internships at real companies?
Yes. Ladder names more than fifty host companies and describes real deliverables, including building machine learning models to grow a company’s subscriber base. It is a placement programme rather than a simulation, which is a meaningful distinction in a market that contains both.
Is an internship or a research project better for university applications?
Neither is universally better, and treating them as competing options is the mistake. They demonstrate different capabilities. If you are applying for a subject assessed on academic preparation, such as most UK courses, a research project usually speaks more directly. If you are applying to US colleges for business or applied computing, an internship can carry real weight.
Can a student do both?
Yes, and some do, though rarely at the same time. Eight weeks of internship at five to ten hours a week alongside a research project is a lot for a student also sitting examinations. Sequencing them across two summers usually produces better work than compressing both into one.
Does either improve admission chances?
Neither can claim that, and you should be sceptical of any provider that does. Admissions decisions depend on grades, tests, references, interviews and the applicant pool in a given year. What either can do is give a student something real to write about and discuss.

ScholarBridge matches students with doctoral-level or equivalent research mentors across six academic fields. Every project is student-led and completed to a standard the student can stand behind in any university interview.
